HealthCare for you, your momma, and Obama

I watched C-SPAN last night until really late.  I don’t normally do that.  The C-SPAN part…  Truth is, I was flipping the channels between TBS’ presentation of the movie “300″ and C-SPAN’s coverage of the HealthCare Reform voting.  As I listened more intently to C-SPAN and heard some of the language used, I got confused as to which channel I had actually landed on.

Then I started to watch comments fly on FaceBook and Twitter.  What I saw were some really negative comments aimed at both sides.  I began to wonder what this all really meant.  What are the facts?  How is this all supposed to work?

Just this morning, an interesting series of articles caught my attention – courtesy of Matthew Paul Turner or as the Twitter world knows him @JesusNeedsNewPR.  The articles were titled “Why Conservative Christians So Often Fail The Common Good” (Part 1) and (Part 2) by Richard T. Hughes.  These articles were long, but worth the read.  Definitely interesting.

The combination of “300″, C-SPAN, FaceBook, Twitter and the Hughes’ articles got me fired up.  Maybe it was more “300″ than anything else…

I know this is a controversial issue.  The thing that is perplexing to me is, why is it so controversial?  Maybe we all had/have reasons for supporting or opposing, but it seems we have lost those reasons and, in some cases, are purely arguing for the sake of arguing.

As I started trying to put the pieces together for myself, I realized what I needed was more of an expert opinion on this than my own.  Someone who is in the HealthCare industry.  I realized I didn’t have to look much further than my own family.  My sister-in-law, Sandee McMillen, is the CEO for ECHO, a non-profit organization aimed at helping the poor and indigent people of the Evansville, IN area receive “…AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE, and APPROPRIATE Primary Health Care…”  Sandee has worked in the HealthCare industry since 1995.  She holds a M.H.A. (Master’s of HealthCare Administration) from the University of Southern Indiana and is currently working towards her M.B.A. at Indiana Wesleyan University WIP 2011.  She recently spent a week in Washington, D.C. speaking with lawmakers about HealthCare reform.  I have asked Sandee to provide a response, #1 from a HealthCare Administrators perspective and #2 from a factual perspective.

Sandee and I don’t agree on everything (she’ll be the first one to tell you that).  We do both agree and believe Christ has instructed us to “help those who are in need of help.”  So what does that look like?  Does it mean a legislative bill for HealthCare or simply feeding the beggar on the street?

So, I ask the lurkers out there to come out.  Start some dialogue.  Leave a comment.  I am curious as to what you think…  4 simple questions (4 and 1/2 if you count #1 as a two-parter).

  1. Do you Support/Oppose the HealthCare Reform Bill or Undecided?  Why?
  2. Do you currently have HealthCare?
  3. Have you read the entire Bill?
  4. Where did you get your information?

extra credit points :-)

  1. (optional) Do you have kids in public school / did you attend public school?
  2. (optional) Do you have auto insurance?
  3. (optional) Do you currently receive Social Security benefits?

Sorry if I sound like the census.  We will give you all a few days to stop lurking, leave some comments and then Sandee will leave her response.

Rules of the game — answer the 4 questions above.  I will not be moderating comments — so play nicely. …and go.
